It may be that Julia Gillard was full of foolish hubris. Or it may simply be that she is shrewder than anyone suspected. Either way, one thing is certain: The former Prime Minister of Australia, one of the members of the G8, is out of her office as leader of the politics in Oz, and it was by her own design. She came to power riding on a wave of Labor party discontent with the then sitting PM, Kevin Rudd. In a snap vote, set forth at the hand of the never-married Julia Gillard, the deputy leader of the Labor party managed to have her supporters kick the man out of his top post, replacing him in 2010. Three years on, in another Labor party vote which Julia Gillard called to put aside questions of her leadership versus that of the former PM, the party decided to switch back to the man who she had usurped. This happened just some months ahead of the next national elections, which analysts and experts had predicted would go very badly for Miss Gillard and her party. So this editorial cartoon lampoons the once hero now goat of her own party, with a punchline that suggests that maybe leaving office like this was the least humiliating way she could have gone home. After all, Gillard, a constant raver against male chauvinism, could always blame her ouster on the good old boys' club which tired of her feminist ways. Whatever history remembers it by, it was one interesting week for the world watching the parliamentary news out of Canberra, and this op-ed Julia Gillard caricature will likely stand the test of time as a piece to remember it by. The date she left office was June 27, 2013, which is when this image was shows in the binary trading news by OptionsClick for analysts, consumers and investors all around the world.
