The crux of the matter with populists is that they do not understand (or do not want to understand) that in democracies, adherence to the rules is more important than the will of the government or the people.
This can be observed in all populist movements.

Which is somehow not really understandable: Someone who insists on law and order and wants to clean up migrants at the borders - how can such a person get upset when he is ultimately caught up in the law-and-order system? The GOP is "horrified" that Trump will be found guilty! Every illegal migrant is found guilty and convicted if he only smiles the wrong way. And all Republicans think it's right ...
