However, political symbols have run out of steam also. In the past a guidepost to a glorious future, now an odd lot in the bargain-basement for political pensioners. Revyakin from Russia has taken the Red Flag in hand, the standard devotional object for the faith in the final victory of communism worldwide. But the final battle has long found its winner. In Revyakin’s piece the hammer and sickle are shaped to form the initials of the most successful brand in the world: Coca Cola - the brown lubricating oil of capitalism. Victory by adaptation. He, who won’t yield, will be snuggled to death. What about Lenin himself, the political icon? Frozen into a garden gnome. This revolutionary pose is nothing more but a fashionable accessory in the garden centre for terraced-house-revolutionaries.
