Art movie

You need ocean
At first glance I laughed. Then I had an eerie, shaky feeling when I discovered the unknown spectator in the first row. Jackson Pollock, I thought, aleatoric art, accidentially done. But of course nothing is accidential in this fantastic philosophic cartoon by Turkish-Norwegian artist Firuz Kutal.
As usual for picture-in-picture cartoons, multiple layers are provided. The cinema setting, a place for screaming action movies, popcorn and softdrinks meets the tranquilizing silence of a museum setting. A place to consume fast and thrilling pictures in a defined length of time is confronted with one sole picture, a »still« of infinite or no duration, leaving it to the spectator what he can see and wants to see. You can find the yellow K if you want to. Kutal explains, »Art too is something to bargain, a decor, something to buy and sell. In everything you do there is so little time for being deeper and there is much to do«.
Art movies in reality are the black sheeps of film industry: they are mostly very experimental in the visual or narrative meaning, and if they are not, they are boring or moanful. They sell poorly because the viewers are few. But they are mostly very close to the name of their genre, being just »Art«.
This cartoon is not about some stereotyped film genre, this cartoon might tell you a story about how fast our fast times of mediocre full-length feature films on mobile phones really are. Kutal: »Being at the surface all the time and running made you I guess, stayed in just one level. You look and see almost everything from this level. But you have other levels. You need to find out other levels. Need being qualitative, instead of quantitative. You need art. You need ocean. You need you.«
Kutal drew this cartoon in 1998. He started with the painting in this cartoon, having some tea and coffee spots and paint drops from previous artworks on the table. It was published in a Norwegian magazine about books, nowadays only presented on toonpool.com.

Yeah, this selected text made me calculate: if you want to view every picture on toonpool for just 5 seconds, it takes 171 days - without sleeping, eating and doing the lavatory stuff...
at least the latter can be done - getting up is optional
